Padcast #28: Record Store Day 2011 With Sayonara

Barely out of the incubator, Wylie, Texas duo, Sayonara spent a weekend at Lilypad recording two singles and an acoustic padcast at the end of February 2011.

Featured in The Pad's #28 podcast (which crashes Record Store Day this year with an exclusive sit-down and Skype interview), Sayonara performs Ganesh and unveils the first performance of Bulletproof Tiger.

Debbie Pucek and Sean Blythe also talk a little about their sound and collaboration and we play the raw tracking for their first Lilypad single, Discourage Wolf and the unmixed results for the next single, Kidnapped (out this summer).

PADCAST #27: "Discourage Wolf" - Introducing Sayonara

Wylie, Texas duo, Sayonara, in production here at Couderay Music, have two songs primping for release as singles (and two more stripped-back, acoustic numbers for a padcast).

Sean Blythe and I had already spent a fair bit of time together (via WorldWideRiot and Hollus). Still, it had been a few years, so to break the ice, we took a break during our first day of tracking and made dinner.

And that's how I got to know singer/guitarist, Debbie Pucek. While Sean, Debbie and I prepared a vegetarian stir-fry (with occasional pauses to tap a 60 year old bottle of sour mash), I learned a few things about my new friend, her music history and how she came to know Sean.

But nothing tells a tale like results. So now without further ado, I am pleased to present Sayonara's debut, Discourage Wolf, with this preview mix direct from the Couderay Music bunker heading for an upcoming Lilypad Records release. -KK

PADCASTS #22-25: HOLLUS PERFORMS LIVE & ACOUSTIC ON THE PAD (A Video Page)

Padcasts #22-25 are video rips so it seemed appropriate to aggregate them. Hope you enjoy my friends from the Chicago band Hollus.

Jamison Acker and Michael Lux have crafted a very fine collection of new songs which they recorded with fellow bandmates Colin Mulhern on bass and Mario Coletta on drums. Founding member Matt Perryman also appears on drums as well as Mike & Marc from Company Of Thieves. Colin handled sessions recorded at Chicago's Rax Trax while Michael and Jamison worked at home. For the finish, "Part One" was mastered here at Lilypad by me.

"Part One" will be available November 2, 2010 direct from the band and their label without labels, or a name. Hah! "Part Two" drops in early 2011.

We warmed the cold living room with a small fire and popped a cork as we launched the new padcast series recorded in an acoustically biased setting. Stripped bare in the usual unplugged approach, The Living Room Series will feature friends and guests performing new and old material, live and reworked to fit the new setting.

Over the years, the demo tape for Priceless Innuendo—which Cath kept after the recording sessions ended, and which lived for a while at the bottom of a suitcase after she relocated to Chicago in 1990—attained a kind of mythical status. Did it exist? What did the songs sound like? Would they ever come to light? Miaow fans were tantalized when “Carnal Drag” and “Fear of the Sun” appeared on the When It All Comes Down compilation. Those songs had been pulled from the aging, brittle tape and restored by Kerry Kelekovich, Cath’s husband and present-day collaborator. New technology has allowed him to rescue the rest of the material on the cassette as well.

How do the songs on Priceless Innuendo sound to Cath now?

“Some of them, lyrically—I want to stuff myself in a box. Others are quite funny. I’m surprised at how free we were to just start playing and actually have the audacity to put out whatever came out without considering what people would think of it. I wish that we had had the chance to elaborate on them and actually put them down properly.”

We can only conjecture as to what the finished version of the album would have sounded like had it come to fruition. But the blueprints that remain capture a band creating and performing at its peak. Nearly a quarter of a century later, Miaow’s debut sounds fresh and vital. It turns out that Priceless Innuendo was worth the wait. -Peter Terzian Feb. 2010 Read the entire essay here.

Priceless Innuendo: The Factory Records Demo LRC179

An audio cassette marked "September '87 Nov. Dec." is used as the primary source for our master. Other cassettes with the same content proved to be unusable for a variety of reasons. Fortunately, all eleven songs have been extracted and sonic issues corrected.

In some cases, files rendered as expected having a fairly musical analogue outcome. A few songs do reveal the overall noise floor/hiss but it seemed allowing this to exist preserved more of the original ambiance. Hiss lovers rejoice!

* Carnal Drag and Fear Of The Sun appeared on LTM's 2003 collection, When It All Comes Down.

Restorations were sourced via a Teac V-570 audio cassette recorder routed through a TC Electronic Finalizer with a 44.1 KHz / 24 bit setting, routed into ProTools 8 and tuned using mastering software by Waves, Bomb Factory and Digidesign.
